project description

One, Two…Tree! is a non-profit organization focused on education in Central America. In Guatemala, we are based in Santiago Atitlán, a beautiful small town with a lot of history and an important indigenous culture that make volunteering here both a unique and authentically Guatemalan experience. Our focus in Santiago lies in providing English classes to primary school children. Currently we collaborate with four schools, where our volunteers teach 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th graders. In this way, we are preparing the students for their secondary education and future professional lives, as the tourism sector is growing quickly in Central America.
The average workload is 16 hours per week (you should add some preparation time for each lesson). You will be teaching about 4 to 5 hours a day, four days a week. You will have Fridays off so you can travel to other towns around Lake Atitlán, hike some of the 34 volcanoes spread around the country, and visit other unique places in Guatemala.

accommodation, food and transport arrangements

We help the volunteers find accommodation with a local host family. Prices range between $150 and $330 per month depending on whether they want food, internet and laundry included. Staying with a family allows the participants to get a truly local experience of the culture and the traditions of the country. As it comes to transportation we help the volunteers with booking the shuttles that go to Santiago Atitlan from the capital. There is a variety of options the participants can choose from, depending on their budget and preference.

training during the project

Volunteers will be trained in the use of our academic materials upon their arrival. These materials are standard throughout our organization and they follow the ESL international levels. All this work is organized and managed on-the-ground by our Volunteer Coordinator. She organizes the arrival, accommodation and teaching schedule of our volunteers in Guatemala.

volunteer profile

We need our volunteers to be fluent in English and posses a communicative level of Spanish. It is important that they are able to work in a multicultural setting and prove to be culturally sensitive and capable of connecting across diverse cultural and linguistic environments. Finally, our participants need to commit to this volunteer position for a minimum of one month, though ideally they would stay for at least 3 months.
